Tonight, we’re unwrapping something truly special — a first look at a brand‑new book franchise universe created right here in Aotearoa.

Introducing the official TEASER for The Cloak of Ranginui — created and written by Funfest’s own MC Big D (Doug Te Moni) , one of our leaders, generals, and long‑time pillars of the kaupapa.

Set in the year 2137, The Cloak of Ranginui : Episode 1, follows siblings Niko and Manaia, raised in a futuristic Auckland of interstellar travel, spaceports, and holographic worlds — yet completely disconnected from their whakapapa. They reject and know nothing of their Māori iwi or Japanese village langauge or heritage.

When they’re sent to live with their grandmother Whaea Annie on remote Hawaiki Island, everything changes.

Whaea Annie rejects technology and forces them to slow down, reconnect, and learn the old ways. Through her stories, she introduces them to their ancestors — Potiki and Anahera — living in the year 1137, a time of tribal alliances, ancient gods, and the forging of The Cloak of Ranginui.

As Annie speaks, the past is not just remembered…

It awakens…

The more Niko and Manaia learn, the more the timelines start to mirror each other — choices repeating, patterns returning, destinies aligning.

What happened in 1137 is happening again in 2137, and the siblings realise they are not just hearing a story. They are stepping into it.

The past and future move toward collision — two timelines spiralling toward a single moment where the cloak must be claimed, by a new bearer.

Only the bearer can awaken the power of the demi-god within...

Their ancestors faced the same choice.

Now, history is preparing to repeat itself.

One will rise to the light.

One will fall to darkness.

This is not just their history.

It is their destiny.
